Sunday School News

Hope you had a blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year with your family and friends.

The children of Sunday School were angels and shepherds in the Christmas Play "A Manger Seen" on Sunday, January 2, 2011.

The 6th and 7th grade confirmands were super actors in the play:

We are blessed with a wonderful giving, caring group of youth at Zion. Thanks be to God! See you in Sunday School.

On Reformation Sunday October 31st, lLook for goblins, witches, angels and princesses running around Sunday School and church. The children of Sunday School will be dressed in their Halloween costumes at 9:15.

The youth of Sunday School will be a part of the Christmas play on January 2, 2011.

The visitation on June 6th was a huge success with 21 parents, grandparents or guardians present in the classes. The coffee hour was hosted by the children of Sunday School.

Our teaching staff for the fall is filled with new and returning teachers. The first day of Sunday School, Rally Day, is September 12th at 9:15am.

The following will be teaching or assisting:
                        Joyce Reichard – preschool and kindergarten
                        Anita Waldron – first, second and third grade
                        Susan Engstrom (new) – fourth and fifth grade
                        Lisa Engstrom - student teacher
                        Anthony Giarrizzo – student teacher

Welcome Susan and Danielle.            
For the family service at 9:15 the children of Sunday School will meet briefly with Pastor every week in the summer in the church.

“Bread of Life”
Blue Berry Crisp by Anita Waldron

4 cups fresh blueberries                       Mix with a fork or hands
½ cup water                                        ¾ cup flour
3 tbsp flour                                          1 cup brown sugar
¼ cup sugar                                         ½ cup butter
Butter a deep baking dish                   ¼ tsp salt (opt)

Put fruit mixture in baking dish. Spread crumbs over blueberries. Bake at 350 until blueberries are soft, liquid is thicker and crust is brown. About 30 minutes. Serve with whipped cream. Serves 6 to 8.


Visitation for Sunday School

On June 6, 2010 at 10:00am, parents, grandparents and guardians are invited to visit your child’s Sunday School class. You can observe how they are being taught and what they are learning each week. The children were asked to invite a friend to visit at the 9:15am service. The youth of Sunday School will be hosting the coffee hour.

Mark June 6th, 2010 10:00am on your calendars. Pennies for Haiti The children of Sunday School collected pennies in plastic bottles during Lent. The congregation also helped by collecting pennies for Haiti. Thank you. 12,964 pennies was the total collected for the ELCA Disaster Relief Fund for Haiti. A total of $129.64. Good job!

“Bread of Life”
June recipe by Gert Hoehler
Cheese Cupcakes

3 pkgs. 8 oz. cream cheese
5 eggs
1 cup sugar
½ tsp. vanilla

Cream eggs and cheese together. Beat in sugar and vanilla. Pour into cupcake tins 2/3 full. Bake at 300 for 40 min. Remove—let settle. Topping 1 cup sour cream ¼ cup sugar ¼ tsp vanilla Mix together and spoon on. Add jelly, cherry etc. on top. Return to oven for 5 min.


On Palm Sunday, March 28 the children of Sunday School presented their plastic bottles filled with pennies to the altar at the 9:15am service.  It was such a touching moment to see the children carry their bottles to the altar. The money collected will be donated to the ELCA Disaster Relief Fund for Haiti.

The children were so happy and excited with the Outreach Easter Egg Hunt. “Thank you.” The children loved it!

The Easter breakfast on April 4th, Easter Sunday, was huge success. About 65 people attended. The breakfast ran from 8:00am to 10:45am for the 9:15 and 10:30 services. Special thanks to the following who supplied bagels, coffee cakes, casseroles, set up and cleaned up: Susan, Ted, Luann, Kathy, Katie, Joyce Elaine, Carolyn, Carol and Anita. You are a great team!

“Bread of Life”                       Recipe for May by Anita

Spinach Quiche

2 bxs Green Giant creamed spinach (thawed)            2 eggs
3/4lb swiss cheese grated                                            1 large can Durkee onion rings
3/4c milk (easy)                                                           Pie crust (Pillsbury-dairy dept)

Beat eggs. Add rest of ingredients. Leave some onion rings to sprinkle on top. Pour into pie shell. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes until golden brown.


The youth helped put together Easter baskets for the shut-ins and hospice patients on Sunday, March 21st after the 9:15 service.

The Sunday School and many more from the congregation collected pennies in bottles during Lent using the “Counting Coins for Kids” calendar. The monies will be sent to the ELCA Disaster Relief Fund for Haiti. The children will present their bottles of pennies to the Alter on Sunday, March 28th.

“Bread of Life” by Anita Waldron

Grandma’s Apple Cake

2 sticks margarine                     2 cups sugar                            
2 eggs                                      4 cups finely chopped apples
2 cups flour                              vanilla & cinnamon
2 tsp baking soda                     4 tsp lemon juice

Cream margarine, sugar and eggs and beat for one minute. Mix dry ingredients. Mix together pour into greases and floured 9x13 pan. Bake at 350 for one hour.


            The Sunday School classes of Miss Joyce and Miss Anita made valentines on February 6 and sent them to the shut-ins. Along with the cards the children sent their prayers and love.

            During Lent the youth of the congregation are using Counting Coins for Kids Calendars to collect pennies in plastic bottles. The total monies collected will be sent to the ELCA Disaster Relief Fund for “Haiti”. All are invited to help with this project.

“Bread of Life”
Recipe by Lee Thor

Grandpa Donlin’s Irish Soda Bread

4 cups flour                                          1 ½ cups milk
4 tsp. baking powder                          ½ cup melted butter (1 stick)
½ cup sugar                                          2 eggs beaten with fork                        
1 tsp. salt                                              1 box (or 15oz) raisins

Run hot water over raisins. Combine raisins and dry ingredients and make a well in the center. Add the liquid ingredients all at once. Mix by hand until moist. Place in greased 9” or 10’ iron frying pan. With a knife, make a criss-cross to chase out the devil*. Bake in preheated oven at 325degrees for 1 hour or until top is light brown.

Let it cool for at least 2 hours before removing from pan.

Look for the Sunday School posters in the Narthex of the church.

The children are growing in their faith and the classes are growing in number.

The children made Christmas cards for the Seafarers gift sacks that were taken to New York by WELCA. The Sunday School classes helped the confirmands make Christmas cookies and cards for the shut-ins. They were given out when they went Christmas caroling with the confirmands.

A large number of Sunday School children were a part of the living Nativity. It was a beautiful experience for all who took part and touched the hearts of many.

Very Sorry...
Due to the snow storm on December 20th I did not get my article for the January Visitor in on time. I apologize especially to Margaret for not getting her delicious recipe into that issue. So here it is now….Anita“Bread of Life”

January Recipe by Margaret Felver

Ricotta Squares

1 bx Duncan Hines butter cake mix                  3 eggs
1 lb ricotta cheese                                              ¾ cup sugar
powdered sugar                                                 2 tsp vanilla

Prepare cake mix according to directions on box. Pour into ungreased 13 x 9 pan.
Beat eggs. Add sugar, ricotta & vanilla. Beat well. Pour this mixture over the cake batter already in pan. Bake at 350 for 1 hour. After allowing cake to cool, cut into squares and remove from pan. Sprinkle with powered sugar. Keep refrigerated.

February Recipe by Joyce Reichard

Apricot Squares

1 11oz bx dried apricots           ¼ lemon juice               2 ½ cups flour
1 ½ cups sugar                          1 ½ cups water             2 cups brown sugar
2 ½ cups quick oatmeal            1 tsp baking powder    2 ½ sticks margarine, melted

Cut apricots into small pieces. Add lemon juice, sugar, and water to apricots in a pan and boil 20-30 min. stirring until apricots are softened. Mix together in a large bowl flour, brown sugar, oatmeal and baking powder; add margarine and mix with hands until thoroughly blended and mixture becomes crumbly. In 9x13 greased pan put ¾ of flour mixture on bottom. Spread apricot mixture over this and the remaining flour mixture. Bake at 350 for 45 min. When cool, cut into squares.


Hope you had a blessed Thanksgiving with your family and friends. We thank God for all he has given us, especially our Savior Jesus Chirst. The children in Sunday School are looking forward to Advent and the birth of Christ on Christmas.

Sunday School will be a part of the Live Nativity on Saturday, December 12th. Look for the children’s posters around the church.

“Bread of Life” December Recipe Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting:

1 ½ cups vegetable oil
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
2 tsp vanilla
2 cups sifted flour
2 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 cups shredded carrots
1 cup chopped nuts
1 can/8oz crushed pineapple drained
1 cup raisins

Beat together oil, sugar, and eggs. Add vanilla. Sift dry ingredients and stir into sugar mixture. Add carrots, nuts, pineapple, raisins and blend thoroughly. Bake in a greased and floured 13x9” pan at 350 for one hour. Cool completely. Cream Cheese Frosting 3 oz cream cheese 1 ¼ cups confectioners sugar sifted ¼ lb butter or margarine 1/8 cup crushed pineapple (optional) 1/8 cup nuts (optional) Beat all ingredients together until smooth. Spread over cooled cake. Makes 12-14 servings.

God created a beautiful earth! Look at all the lovely reds, oranges, yellows, dark purples and browns God has painted the leaves on the trees.

Children are like fall leaves with many colors, sizes and shapes. Bring them to God’s House!

Adding to our wonderful teachers in Sunday School is a new student teacher Lisa Engstrom. Welcome.

Parents visitation on June 7th was a huge success. The parents sat in on the classes and viewed the crafts. Refreshments were served at the coffee hour which was hosted by the children. The Easter Breakfast on Easter Sunday, April 12 was a huge success. There were people from the Sunrise Service and from our 9:15 and 10:30 services, totaling 60 in all. Special thanks to those who helped set up, bake, make the breakfast casseroles, supply the bagels and orange juice, and clean up. I couldn’t have done this without all of your help.

God has blessed the New Year and Sunday School for 2009. The Sunday School is looking forward to new projects for spring; valentines for the shut-ins, Lenten donations, Food for Friends and many others. PARENTS AND STUDENTS – Come learn through the Bible. Jesus is our Savior and Lord.

Sunday School has run smoothly since Rally Day.

Attendance has been consistent due to our wonderful dedicated teachers. Preschool and Kindergarten - Miss Joyce & Miss Christina First, second and third grade – Miss Anita with helpers Fourth and fifth grade – Miss Joan and Mr. Anthony.

Helpers include: Susan Engstrom, Kelly Monte, Laura Cottrell, Dawn Poesl and Keri Golden. A special thanks to all teachers and helpers.

The Christmas program this year is a “Live Nativity” on December 13th from 6:30pm - 8:30pm. This includes the Confirmands, adults from the congregation and live animals to pet. “MARK YOUR CALENDAR”.

Rally Day opened the first day of Sunday School on Sunday, September 7, 2008. Bibles were given at the 9:15am service to the following children who were promoted to the 4th and 5th grade intermediate class. Their names were inscribed on the covers in gold lettering: Zackary Cottrell, Shay Palmer, Kathleen Sillen, Michael Ferdinandi, Michael Schmalenberger.

There was a Rally Day picnic after the 9:15am and 10:30am services. More that 50 people enjoyed fellowship and love. They played games, there was a piñata, mind games for adults, guess the M & M’s and pretzels in the jars. The food was so good. Hot dogs, cheesy potatoes, macaroni and cheese, pretzels, potato chips, desserts and lots more.

A special thanks to the teachers who helped set up, cook, and clean up. Thanks to those who helped with the games, brought food and desserts. All your wonderful help made Rally Day 2008 a huge success.

Praise the Lord! For God has given us a wonderful Sunday School.

The June 8th visitation for parents was a huge success. The parents set in on the classes, viewed the art show and had refreshments after classes at a coffee hour.

“Kyle Murphy” has shown us all how to love our church and serve our Lord Jesus. He is a super star with perfect attendance in Sunday School. We are very proud of you, Kyle.

Keri Golden is our new student teacher for Sunday School. Miss Katy will be on leave in the fall as she goes on to college. We will miss her sweet smile and personality. Thank you for three years of joyful service.

Mark your calendars, September 7th. This is Rally Day and the first day of Sunday School.

The children of the Sunday School will briefly meet with Pastor at the 9:15am Family Service every week in the summer. Join us at this service.
