Take action to improve Affordable Housing Programs!

ActionAlertUrge your Senators to pass Bipartisan Housing Assistance Reforms!

Lack of affordable housing and rising rent-costs contribute greatly to homelessness and inescapable financial burdens for many low-income families. Our federal public and assisted housing programs exist to provide critical support and access to safe homes for families across the nation. However, the current government policies and economic institutions that are dedicated to ensuring access to affordable housing do not efficiently reach all who are in need of assistance.

The Housing Opportunities through Modernization Act, which unanimously passed the House of Representatives earlier this year, would make improvements to our nation’s housing programs. This bipartisan housing bill will make more efficient use of tax-payer money, allowing funds to expand affordable housing opportunities for families in need of support. It will also help raise the standard of living and enable greater economic opportunity for our community members who face a high-risk of homelessness. Now, it is the Senate’s turn to vote and send this bill to the President’s desk before the end of the year.

Urge the Senate to pass comprehensive housing reform now at the ELCA Action Center!

As a Lutherans, we care deeply about the health of our communities and we commit ourselves to addressing why our brothers and sisters continue to live in poverty. Through our ELCA social statement on economic life, “Sufficient, Sustainable Livelihood for All”, we call for policies that “address the barriers individuals face in preparing for and sustaining livelihood.”

From providing shelter and immediate relief to those who are hungry, to pushing for economic justice in our neighborhoods, our ELCA ministries across the country are dedicated to proclaiming the good news of God in Christ through both word and deed. This is why Congress must hear from us!

How can we work to create platforms for their voices to be heard by decision makers?
