World Food Day

Today, on World Food Day, ELCA World Hunger joins millions around the world in the commitment to end hunger.

The right to food is a basic need that goes unmet for many here at home and around the world. Every day, 795 million people go hungry. Half are from farming families.

Farmers in developing countries are often among the poorest people. But with the right tools to sustain food production, farmers have a chance to break the cycle of poverty. Through your support of ELCA World Hunger, rural farmers are learning ways to farm sustainably, with care for the earth and for their community.

Make a gift today to help ensure even more farmers receive the education and training they need to secure food and income for their families.

“The new techniques really work,” says Poung, showing off her second crop of radishes. “I can hardly believe it!” Her husband, Pheng, chimes in, “Thank you very much for teaching us how to grow crops.”

Farmers Poung Bouch and her husband, Pheng Rin, in Cambodia carefully saved to purchase farmland to support their family. They were filled with hope as they secured an acre and planted their first crops.

The first harvest was a struggle, but Poung was determined to be successful. She enrolled in The Lutheran World Federation’s Farmer Field School, made possible by your generosity to ELCA World Hunger, and learned practices she could put to use the next season. The couple prepared the soil as taught by the school and invested $7 in radish seeds. That season, they reaped 2.5 tons of radishes, earning $366!

We are a church that believes God is calling us into the world – together. And, we are making headway in the fight to end hunger – for good.

Will you continue to join us in this fight with a gift today?

We are thankful for you, your prayers, partnership and generous gifts for our brothers and sisters in need.

In Christ’s service,

The Rev. Daniel Rift
